Embracing a Wabi-Sabi Aesthetic, the Lacuna Creative Space Uses Natural Materials to Create a Minimalist but Inviting Gathering/Event Space for Creatives
LOS ANGELES – Sept. 24, 2024 – Lacuna, a gathering and event space for creatives recently opened in the West Adams neighborhood of South Los Angeles.
Created by artist and interior designer Dre Shapiro, Lacuna is an indoor/outdoor venue that serves as a sophisticated, high-end canvas for photo shoots and events, far surpassing the typical converted warehouse space.
“The goal was to craft a space that not only stood out for its uniqueness but also embodied a deep commitment to quality, using only the finest materials,” Shapiro said. “To bring warmth and character to Lacuna, I prioritized natural materials.”
The once bare concrete block walls were meticulously plastered, and the painted arches and key beams in the beau truss ceiling were sandblasted to reveal their natural texture. Shapiro’s team spared no expense in building a state-of-the-art kitchen, featuring 5,000-year-old ash veneer from Italy and the best materials available for surfaces and hardware.
Shapiro also custom-designed a planter sink for Lacuna’s bathhouse and commissioned an artist to sculpt its organic ceramic sconces, adding layers of artistry and bespoke detail. For the exterior courtyard, Shapiro initially planned to use Ipe wood, long considered the pinnacle of outdoor building materials. Her contractor, however, steered her toward specifying Kebony dually modified wood. This innovative wood product not only outperforms most tropical hardwoods but also offers a sustainable alternative. The Kebony process is 100% eco-friendly, providing the beauty of real wood without compromising the environment—a perfect match for Lacuna's ethos.
“Our Kebony slatted exterior has become one of the most striking features of Lacuna,” Shapiro said. “Currently a rich brown, we embrace its natural aging process and will allow it to gracefully silver over time.”
Every aspect of Lacuna reflects Shapiro’s unwavering personal attention to detail and dedication to using the best products and materials. “The inclusion of Kebony as one of our collaborators underscores this commitment, enhancing the venue's uniqueness and enduring quality,” she said.
Among many other contributors the project includes Kassandra Thatcher, who designed its organic ceramic sconces, gracing the venue with a touch of nature-inspired elegance. Miele, the provider of appliances for the state-of-the-art kitchen, delivered functionality combined with sophistication. Splash Lab fabricated Lacuna’s unique trough/planter sink. And Willis provided the exquisite Lapitec stone composite countertops and Fenix cabinet fronts.
